Hapkido
Originating in Korea, the meaning of Hapkido, way of harmony, is shared with Japanese Aikido. Although there are many stylistic similarities, the techniques, however, differ in many ways.
You’ll learn to use kicks and punches as well as grappling and joint locks. Practise Hapkido and you won’t simply turn your opponent’s strength against him/her, you’ll learn techniques to control the violence until your opponent can no longer fight.
It has been suggested that the roots of many of the techniques of Hapkido can be found in Aikijujitsu and as there is no record of Hapkido before the Japanese invasion of 1909, this is a strong probability. But many aspects of the system incorporate traditions outside of Aiki, such as the Korean and northern Chinese kicking techniques.
It could be said then that Hapkido derives from both ancient and modern, indigenous and foreign systems and that its technical system is evidence of that.
