Hybrid Systems

Though this is a practice that has happened throughout the history of the martial arts, the result of taking skills learnt from a number of sources and using them to create something new is what we’ve termed “Hybrid Systems”.  The most recognisable example of this is Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee’s system that draws its primary influences from Wushu , Boxing and Fencing.

Recently, a growing number of street self-defence systems have emerged, each unique in their own way, having been developed by individuals who have gained experience in a number of different styles and then combined them.

Due to this process of evolution, and a focus on practicality and pragmatism, these systems are often designed to be devastatingly effective in street confrontation scenarios.

We think that, due to their diversity, they sit naturally as “systems” on their own, separate from the more competition focused Mixed Martial Arts. Also, due to the fact that these systems are so varied, we have excluded them from our Martial Arts Selector tool.
